Boxing has become one of the most celebrated sports of our time. With big name matches being held in glamorous locations like Las Vegas, it attracts the interest of media world wide as well as the attention of boxing enthusiasts.

The history of boxing shows us that the sport is basically the same as when it was first introduced. Granted some of the aspects have evolved considerably since then. However, the basic premise remains largely the same.

To trace the history of boxing to its roots we need to go back to North Africa during 4000 BC. Another place that participated in boxing early on was the Mediterranean during 1500 BC.

The first documented evidence of boxing was in Greece in 900 BC, when a ruler found the practice of watching two men beat each other entertaining. The difference between this early form of boxing and the boxing we enjoy today is that the ruler, a man named Thesus, allowed the boxing match to continue until one of the opponents was killed.

The history of boxing also indicates a very big difference in the attire worn by the boxers during the beginning of the sport and the safety equipment required today. Early boxers wore nothing except for padding on their arms and a pair of unpadded gloves.

Boxing was one of the first Olympic sports. It was part of the competition at the 668 BC Olympic Games. The competitors wore clothing but instead of gloves their hands were covered with leather straps that were designed to protect them from injury.

Looking at the more recent history of boxing we see that in 1681 in London the first bare-knuckled prize fight was fought. Very similar to the early fights that occurred in Greece, this type of boxing didn’t afford any type of protection for the participants.

As the name indicates they fought with their bare hands. Throwing punches directly to the body and the head of their opponents. This continued for many years and in 1743 the first set of documented rules were introduced. This was done mainly to prevent the deaths that had been occurring during the matches.

The rules stated that if a man fell and didn’t get up after a period of 30 seconds the boxing match would be over. It was also during this period that Boxing Gloves with padding were introduced and required.

Reviewing the history of boxing shows that the sport rose in popularity and championships with prize money were soon formed. This eventually graduated into the introduction of amateur boxing which is what we see during the Olympic Games today.

In amateur boxing the focus is mainly on landing punches that will score you points. The competitors are not as concerned with landing a knock-out as professional boxers are.

Throughout the recent history of boxing many amateur boxers, after competing in the Olympic Games will progress to the world of professional boxing. With the prize money many times in the millions of dollars and the endorsement deals exceeding that, it’s a lucrative career move.

Should I choose a hanging bag or free-standing bag?

Free standing bags are heavy bags that have large rounded bases and rest on the floor rather than suspended from the ceiling or hung from wall mounts. Free standing bags make a great choice for anyone who will be both punching and kicking the bag, this is because the foam on free standing bags begins close to the base and provides more usable striking surface for kicks.

Another good feature of free standing bags is that, even when filled, that can be easily rolled away for storage or just rolled to the corner of the room. Standing bags can be filled with either water or sand. In most cases water is preferred; this is because water provides some energy feedback and adds a more realistic feel when hitting the bag. Sand will make the bag weigh more, but will generate a thick, unyielding feel. Standing bags are usually designed to weigh between 250 and 300 lbs. when filled.

Hanging bags are heavy bags that are suspended from wall mounts or from the ceiling through the use of chains and hooks. Heavy bags are known to be extremely durable and provide you with an intensive, fluid workout that develops stamina, strength and overall cardiovascular fitness. Hanging bags also provide some sway, which is good for developing coordination and improving reaction time.

Choosing the correct weight

The more weight a bag has, the less sway it will produce. Too much will make the bag hard to hit, and too little sway will make the bag feel like a rock, and fail to absorb impacts which will cause damage to bones and tendons over time. A 5′8″ male with a weight of about 170 lbs. should look for a bag weighing between 60 and 70lbs. More skilled or heavier hitters might want to look for something closer to 100lbs while those looking for a bag with more sway might want to consider something near the 40lb. mark.

Choosing the right hanging bag

The market is almost overflowing with heavy bag manufactures; however there are a few who stand out. Heavy bags from TKO are generally considered to be very high quality and are known for there durability. Their bags are sought after by gyms and boxing schools alike. Everlast, while at the high end of the price range, makes very high quality equipment and should be considered when looking for a Heavy Bag.

Leather bags are extremely long lasting and will have a more comfortable feel when struck. Vinyl bags can mimic the feel and look of leather while remaining more affordable. Water-core hanging bags are adjustable in weight; this adjust-ability is attained by under-filling the water core.

Hanging a Heavy Bag

Unlike free-standing bags, hanging bags need additional hardware before they can be used. There are a variety of wall mounts and hooks that you can buy to mount your heavy bag virtually anywhere you need to. Common places to hang the bag are garages, workout rooms and basements. If you are interested in keeping the bag outside, you may want to look into a weatherproof, or indoor/outdoor heavy bag.

On the big screen boxing movies have become more successful than any other sports related film. Boxing movies such as Rocky and Million Dollar Baby are the only sports related films to win Academy Awards for Best Picture.

Directors of boxing movies have the great ability of creating characters with so much in common with the audience. Characters who come from disadvantage backgrounds that are used to scrapping for food and money to support families and loved ones, thus when it comes to fighting for survival in a boxing ring they have what it takes to win.

However they never have the guidance or confidence to realize their full potential. This is where directors create a kind, lovable, knowledgeable character who acts as a father figure and mentor. The audience is then taken on a journey of these two characters quest for glory which involves some of the following, heartbreak, struggle, sacrifice and belief.

In any sport, no matter what it is, people will be drawn naturally to the underdog and cheer for them. People don’t like favorites winning unless of course they have the favorite backed! This is where directors create another character one that the audience dislikes, rude, arrogant, cocky etc.. who is at the top of the sport.

These two rivals are finally pitted against each other, in one corner you have a fighter that everyone hates and in the other corner a fighter whom everyone has come to love and admire.

Audiences like happy endings they are brought up with the stories of Snow white, Cinderella etc.. they want to exit the cinema happier than they entered. They want the underdog to win because they know how it feels to be an underdog.

The audience admires a character with pride strength and courage. Great directors are aware of this knowing what the audience desires and gives it to them.

Boxing movies work because everyone loves a good underdog story!

Top Ten Boxing Movies Countdown

10.Rocky III (1982)

Released in 1982 Rocky III written, directed and starred in by Sylvester Stallone became the third movie of the Rocky Franchise. Boxer Rocky Balboa enjoys the wealth he has as world-champion. However when he treats his family and friends the same way, he’s a ticking time bomb, ready to go off at any moment. Though LaMotta desires his family’s love, something always seems to come between them. Perhaps it’s his violent bouts of paranoia and jealousy. This kind of rage helped make him a champ, but in real life, he winds up in the ring alone. An emotionally self-destructive boxer’s journey through life, as the violence and temper that leads him to the top in the ring, destroys his life outside it.

1. Rocky (1976)

Through a publicity stunt, Rocky is set up to fight Apollo Creed, the current heavyweight champion who is already set to win. A magnificent underdog story!

Do an online search of Boxing Gloves, and you’ll get more results returned than you know what to do with! First of all, you need to determine the purpose of your gloves. Are they for full contact boxing? Martial Arts sparring? Training? Bag work? Aerobic Kick Boxing? Establish which kind of fighting you plan on participating in first. Then look at the various styles, sizes and weights.

First, go to any sporting goods store or eBay and pick up a stock pair of gloves. But will they protect you and will they help you to become a better fighter? Or are they basically worthless? Many fighters will tell you that leather gloves are the best. They may cost a little more (likely), but you will get a quality pair that will provide better support and will last longer. Note: For the purpose of this discussion we will assume you’re not a fitness class or hobbyist boxer.

You truly will get what you pay for. But that’s OK in some cases. If you’re not in the Golden Gloves, or plan on being a contestant on The Contender, then you may not need $400 gloves. But if you spend $15 on a pair, don’t expect to be the next Oscar De la Hoya. If you’re serious about the sport, and aren’t just trying it out to see if you like it, or even just periodically hitting the bag as a hobby, then invest in a good pair of gloves.

The weight of the glove is important.

You will be able to find weights ranging from 10 to 20 ounces. In most professional boxing matches, the fighters usually wear 10 oz gloves. However, for training purposes, most gloves weigh 12 oz, 14 oz, and 16 oz. The heavier the glove, the more protection it offers. For beginners, 14 oz and 16 oz gloves are recommended. For sparring purposes, 16 oz boxing gloves are standard.

Get the right size.

Most gloves are sized small, medium and large sizes. On average, men will wear large, women will wear medium and youth will wear small. Of course this will vary if one has exceptionally large or small mitts. Some manufacturers also vary slightly, but for the most part the sizing is fairly standardized.

Velcro or laces?

The classic style Boxing Gloves that you always see in prize fights are tied on with laces. Just like lacing up your shoes, laces provide a nice snug fit. One thing to remember though is that it takes two people to get lace up gloves on.

The advantage to buying a pair of boxing gloves with Velcro straps is that you can easily put on the gloves, and remove them yourself. If you have ever tried to lace a pair of gloves when nobody is around, it is almost impossible. For your average person and general training purposes, gloves with Velcro straps are very acceptable.

Buying a decent pair of boxing / Sparring Gloves isn’t too difficult. It just takes a little more thought that simply making a run to your favorite sporting goods store and picking up a pair that is on sale. Determine which type will suit you best.

Hand Wraps

Many bodybuilders and powerlifters use wrist straps as a means of reinforcing hand and forearm grip on the bar while doing heavy compound lifts, such as rows or deadlifts. Others feel that using wraps is counterproductive to bodybuilding goals, and that the long-term use of wraps leads to underdeveloped forearms, bicep, and grip strength. But which side is correct? There are three main schools of thought when it comes to Wrist Wrap usage in the gym.

All the time

Some trainers use wrist wraps all the time. They cite safety reasons. They believe that the grip/forearms will always give out before the back, so it’s always best to use wraps to ensure the back receives a complete workout. Many athletes who subscribe to the ‘all the time’ theory often do additional bicep, forearm, and grip work to compensate for the lack of indirect work these groups receive as a result of the wraps being used.

Some of the time

To some athletes, the wraps are just like a belt or knee wraps – just another tool in the box that is useful at times. When going for max poundage’s on the heaviest sets, use them. Other than that, don’t bother. They believe that part of functional strength is being able to hold a heavy bar, and it should be done as frequently as possible. However, they also recognize the importance of using tools to improve performance. Also, as most bicep tear injuries occur during heavy deadlifts or rows, this school of thought calls for wrist straps whenever the weight being moved approaches the ‘dangerous’ level.

None of the time

Some purists see wrist straps as a crutch, used by people unwilling to develop the forearm and grip strength to hold heavy bars. These people are common in intermediate circles, but fewer in advanced circles, where most world-class deadlifters do use wrist straps most of the time.

Who is correct? As with many debated bodybuilding topics, determining the “best” theory is difficult. The best method is the one that delivers the most results in the shortest amount of time for the trainer. If it works best, it is the best! Try using straps for workouts, and try training without them. Find your own solution. And above all, never be afraid to mix it up, and try differing methods from time to time to keep the body guessing – and growing!
